Do You Have a Cockroach Infestation

Updated: Dec 21, 2024

Essential scavengers or dirty Intruders?

Living along the east coast of Australia means encountering a variety of pests, including also, a variety of cockroach species. Understanding the differences between these common intruders can help to identify and eradicate infestations in variable environments.

Although cockroaches play a unique and important role in the ecosystem around us, they are often associated with unsanitary conditions, and their presence can evoke feelings of disgust, fear, or sometimes anxiety. They are known carriers of bacteria and allergens, which can contribute to health concerns, adding to the discomfort. Many people also find cockroaches unsettling due to their rapid movement and tendency to appear in unexpected places.

Types of Cockroaches

Identifying the type of cockroach before treating an infestation is critical, as different species of cockroaches may require different pesticides, bait or treatment methods. German cockroaches, for instance, multiply fast and are typically found indoors and thrive in kitchens and bathrooms, while American cockroaches tend to live in basements and sewer systems.

There are various species of cockroaches, each with unique characteristics:

American Cockroach: Large, reddish-brown, and capable of gliding short distances.

German Cockroach: Despite its name, this species originated from Southeast China. The male German Cockroach is tan or pale brown with two dark streaks on its head, while the female is darker brown with broader abdomens. This cockroach is notoriously difficult to eradicate due to its rapid reproduction rate.

Brown-Banded Cockroach: Small, brown with lighter bands, often found in warmer climates.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroach: Known for its distinctive hissing sound, it is surprisingly popular as a pet due to its manageable care needs, large size, and docile nature.

Do cockroaches spread bacteria?

Although cockroaches are associated with filth, they are not inherently "dirty." Instead, they clean up organic debris, feeding on crumbs, waste, and decaying matter. However, their habit of traveling through garbage and sewage means they can pick up and transfer bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. coli, contaminating food and surfaces.

Where do cockroaches live?

Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures, and the coastal climate provides the heat and moisture that cockroaches need to survive and reproduce. They are particularly drawn to areas where water and warmth are consistently available, such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or basements.  German cockroaches are more elusive, and are particularly problematic in these settings, nesting in cracks, crevices and appliances like refrigerators, ovens and microwaves, making them a challenge to locate and eliminate.

Additionally, high-density living in coastal cities offers ample food sources, shelter and hiding spots.  They are drawn to coastlines and rivers, as they need regular access to water, and homes and businesses in these regions often have highter moisture levels, which can exacerbate infestations.

How do cockroaches spread?

Cockroaches spread primarily through human activity. They hitchhike on school bags, handbags or luggage, furniture, and groceries, mostly entering homes unnoticed. Once inside, they reproduce quickly, with some species laying hundreds of eggs in their lifetime.

The lifecycle of cockroaches

Cockroaches undergo a simple metamorphosis with three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Female cockroaches lay eggs in protective cases called ‘ootheca’, which can contain multiple embryos. After hatching, nymphs emerge, resembling smaller versions of adult cockroaches but without wings. Nymphs malt several times before reaching maturity. Depending on the species, this process can take weeks or months, but it ensures a steady population growth.

Can cockroaches fly?

Certain species, such as the American cockroach, are capable of flight, although they typically glide rather than fly long distances. Other species, like the German Cockroach, have wings but rarely use them for flying.

German Cockroach Infestation

It is noteworthy that among all species, German cockroaches pose the greatest challenge for eradication. They multiply rapidly, adapt to various environments, and are resistant to many common pesticides. Enlist the help of a knowlegeable pest control company to effectively eradicate German Cockroaches. Theses pests are notoriously difficult to control due to their rapid reproduction, resilience to many other over-the-counter treatments, and ability to hide in hard-to-reach places.

Here’s why professional help from a pest technician is required:

  1. Specialised knowledge helps them target infestations.

  2. Professional-grade treatments high quality, targeted insecticides and baits that are not available to the public, ensuring more thorough extermination.

  3. Resistance issues: German cockroaches are resistant to many off-the-shelf products, and improper use of sprays or baits can make the problem worse by spreading them further.

  4. Repellent issues: While repellents can deter cockroaches, they don’t address hidden infestations.  German cockroaches are adept at finding shelter in cracks, appliances and other hard-to reach places. Repellents alone may push them deeper into your home rather than eliminate them.

  5. Rapid reproduction: German cockroaches reproduce quickly, with females producing ootheca containing dozens of eggs. A single overlooked cockroach can restart an infestation.

  6. Integrated approach needed:  Combining chemical treatments and advice on sanitation and exclusion methods to provide long-term solutions. Successful eradication typically requires baits, insect growth regulators (IGRs), and targeted treatments rather than just repellents.

Best practice for cockroach pest control

Most cockroaches can be controlled by maintaining a clean environment that offers them little in the way of food and water. For instance, a human will eat a slice of bread, but a hungry cockroach could feast on a left-over crumb of bread, glue, hair, flakes of dried skin, book bindings or any available decaying organic matter.

  • Eliminate Food Sources: Store food in airtight containers, clean up crumbs and spills promptly, and avoid leaving pet food out overnight.

  • Reduce Moisture: Fix leaking pipes, use dehumidifiers in damp areas, and ensure proper ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms.

  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect and seal cracks, crevices, and gaps around doors, windows, and pipes to prevent cockroaches from entering your home.

  • Declutter: Remove unnecessary items such as cardboard boxes and paper piles, which can serve as hiding spots for cockroaches.

  • The benefits of regular General Pest Treatments include a) cockroach repellents to create a barrier to prevent new cockroaches from entering your home or business.  b) Early detection and c) targets multiple pests (spiders, ants and cockroaches), reducing the overall pest pressure in your environment.
